While opening the delightful and adorable Winnie the Poo feature against the final Harry Potter movie may have been an act of self-sabotage, I’m not sure opening Raya and the Last Dragon on the same weekend as the final episode of Marvel’s WandaVision was the right call either. Circumstances and inflation notwithstanding, this is the lowest domestic debut for a Disney toon since Winnie the Poo opened against Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows part II with a mere $7.7 million in July of 2011. The $8.25 million domestic debut of Raya and the Last Dragon was maybe 1/5 of what would have been expected for even a “disappointing” Disney toon launch like Onward ($39 million on this weekend last year in 4,310 theaters) or The Good Dinosaur (a $55 million Wed-Sun Thanksgiving launch in 2015).
